Every little step counts. Whether it be physical steps – if you are walking from one location to another – or taking any other action steps towards a goal, building your business or career, decluttering your house, choosing healthy eating options, and on and on – each and every step you take gets you closer to your goal.
More often than not, we know what we have to do in order to obtain what we want. But what commonly happens is that we are so overwhelmed by the enormity of our goal that we end up paralysed from taking any action at all.
The key is to break the goal down into bite-sized pieces.
I have hiked the Inca Trail in Peru twice and both times, I remember the guides saying “Just take baby steps. One foot in front of the other and you will make it.” And it’s true.
Yes, my big goal was to reach Machu Picchu. But the knowledge of the distance as well as the difficulty of some of the ascents and descents could have stopped me before I even started. My guides’ advice was spot on. Just placing one foot in front of the other was all I had to focus on in order to get me to my goal.
It doesn’t matter how big or small an action step is. The important thing is to take that one step. Then the next. And the next.
And with just the right number of those ‘next steps’, you’ll get to your goal.
