Imagine I handed you $525,000 and gave you one year in which to spend it.
Would you go on a big spending spree, buying up anything and everything that happened to catch your eye? Or would you sit down and think about what you’d really love and get really focussed on where to invest it?
It’s quite an exciting prospect, isn’t it? All that money and one year to spend it in. Think about all the exciting things you could do with that money.
It’s a gift out of the blue.
So, what if I said that those 525,000 units weren’t dollars, but were minutes of life? Because 525,000 is the exact number of minutes of life each of us is gifted with for each year of life that we live.
So what do we do with that gift?
Well, let’s take away some of the non-negotiables such as sleeping an average of 8 hours a day. That uses up 175,000 minutes. Then there are the basics such as showering, brushing teeth, preparing meals, eating and cleaning – let’s say roughly 2 hours a day on average, so that’s 43,800 minutes gone. Then there’s working 8 hours a day, and maybe 1 hour each way for commuting. That’s a further 156,000 minutes of your year committed. So, all up, out of those 525,000 minutes, 374,000 minutes are already allocated – leaving you with just 150,200 discretionary minutes to spend.
Now, unlike a gift of money where it’s like receiving a bonus on top of what you already have – and let’s face it, you can always find ways to get more money – time is a very different commodity. When time is gone, it’s GONE. You can’t add any more minutes to your year.
So, I ask you… Now that you have 150,200 minutes of time gifted to you and you have 12 months in which to spend them, how will you spend those minutes? Reacting to events that grab your attention as they come along? Sitting watching TV? Spending hours and hours mindlessly scrolling through the latest social media feeds? Or will you sit down, think about what you’d really love to be, have or achieve in that year, and then get really focussed on investing each of those precious minutes into creating those results?
All those minutes and one year to spend them in. Think about all the exciting things you could do with those minutes.
It’s a gift out of the blue.
So thoughtful and beautiful Vera
Thank you very much
