The New Year is just days away and for many of us, our thoughts and conversations turn more and more towards our New Year’s Resolutions.
But are they truly resolutions, or just simply wish lists?
There’s a big difference.
The Oxford Dictionary defines a resolution as:
“A firm decision to do or not to do something”.
It comes from the base word of Resolute, which itself is defined as:
“Admirably purposeful, determined, and unwavering.”
Now, think about your New Year’s Resolutions. Are they admirably purposeful, determined and unwavering? Are your statements demonstrating your firm decision to do or not do something?
Of course it’s perfectly fine to have wish lists. We all have them. But keep in mind that wish lists come from a place of powerlessness – the power of making a wish come true sits outside of us.
However, resolutions are different. They come from a place of power – taking ownership and responsibility of the outcome that we want to create.
So this year, think about what it is you will be resolute on. What are the things you want to be different in this coming year – in your health, your relationships, your business or career and your time and money freedom? And now – what decisions will you make on doing or not doing in order to create those different results?
Although we can decide to create change in our lives at any time of year, the New Year can be the catalyst for drawing a line in the sand – leaving our past decisions and results behind us and creating that fresh opportunity to be and to do things differently.
It’s a fresh year and a fresh start. Make it a great one!
