Destination

In this series, I’m taking you through the 5 Dynamical Deeds that you need to complete in order to create the life of your dreams.

Number 1 on the list is that you must have a destination.

You need to know what you’re aiming for and you need to be crystal clear about it.  Just as you need to have a detailed blueprint to build a house, the design for the life you’d love to be living needs to be just as detailed.

Think about the types of statements most of us make whenever we’re asked about what we’d love in life.

I want to be happy. I want to be rich.  I want to be in a married. I want to be single.  I want a job that pays me lots of money. I want to live in a nice house.

Sure, they all sound good, don’t they?  I mean, who wouldn’t want to be happy, rich, in a relationship or single, earning lots of money and living in a nice house?

The thing is, each of those can mean something different to everyone.

A nice house to me may look very different to a nice house to you.  A lot of money to your neighbour may be 500 dollars and to you it might be one million dollars. To you, being in a relationship might mean being married, and to someone else, being in a relationship might mean having someone to go out with on a Saturday night.

And what about the good old “I just want to be happy” statement that comes so automatically to us?  What does that actually mean?  Of course it’s natural to want to be happy.  But happy can mean so many different things to so many different people.

A general direction won’t cut it when it comes to creating a life that you’d love.  You need to get specific about your destination.

Take the ‘nice house’ example.   If I went to a builder and told them to build me a nice house, how on earth would they know what to build?  They’d need much more clarity, wouldn’t they?

Being someone who has gone through the experience of building a home, I can assure you the amount of detail required is staggering.  It’s not just the size of the house in square meters and the number and types of rooms, it’s also the materials the house is made of, the paint colours, the tiles, the colour of the grout between the tiles, the lining of the cupboard drawers, the locations of every electrical socket, the type of glass on the windows, the shapes and sizes of the windows, the damp-proofing, etc., etc., etc.

The same goes with creating a blueprint for your life. The more specific the detail, the more clarity you will have on what it is you are aiming for.  And it’s that goal that what will create the anchor for all your decisions going forward. And that’s what will keep you from getting distracted by anything and everything and it’s what will enable you to maintain your focus and to direct your energy on creating that dream life.

There’s a saying by Seneca the Younger: “No wind blows in favour of a ship without direction.”

Having clarity about what you want for your life will make the choices you make every day so much easier, your priorities will be clearer, and most importantly, this clarity will get you moving toward the life you want to create.

So, if you’ve never done this before, why not try.  Set aside some quite time for yourself and think about what you want for your life. Be specific. Be descriptive. And get really crystal clear on your destination.

Coming up over the next 4 publications, I’ll be going into each of the remaining Dynamical Deeds in more detail and exploring some practical ways that you can apply these to your life.
