The power of suggestion is real and it IS powerful.
We all have a natural tendency to internalise the words, messages and meanings of the things we hear other people say.
Tell a little kid that they aren’t good at maths and what happens? They become someone who goes through life saying “oh, I’m not good at maths”. And not only saying those words but acting accordingly.
It’s important to note that it’s not just kids that are vulnerable to internalising other people’s messages. We are all susceptible to it.
Someone tells you that your favourite colour looks aweful on you – what do you do? I bet you start questioning your own taste and it’s likely that you’ll stop wearing that colour.
Someone tells you that you’ll never amount to much, that you can’t have that particular career, that you don’t have the right education, you are too young, too old, you don’t have the right background, or the right whatever – and what happens? If you allow that voice to get inside of you, those messages will drive all your actions. And it’s your actions that deliver your results.
When all those voices come clanging at us, our job is to drown out that external noise and turn up the volume of the only voice that is true for us – our inner voice.
